Radical
Radical, or Rad, was like cool x 10. The late 80's cartoon characters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, was some of the main users of this phrase. But, it was very popular throughout the 80's.
#19
Bodacious
No need to comment further. Why would I argue with Bill and Ted? They very well could have made half the words on this list up. WyldStallions 4Ever!!!
#18
I know you are, but what am I?
Pee Wee absolutely owned this phrase in the 80's. Using this phrase over and over was one of the quickest ways to get someone to want to murder you. To some people it was like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard.
#17
Studmuffin
I would type out a whole description on what a Studmuffin is, but a picture is worth a thousand words.
#16
Gnarly
(WARNING---There are a couple of explicit words on this video)
Skip up to 1:14 for Spicoli saying gnarly, if you don't want to wait.
Jeff Spicoli was the progenitor of quite a few of these phrases on this list. Gnarly was a very versatile word that could be used to describe something totally disgusting or something totally awesome. Your choice depending on the situation.
#15
Smooth Move
Smooth move was a term used sarcastically to point out an action that was, actually, not so smooth, and, in all likelihood, made the person look like a total idiot. If you wanted to stick the knife in just a little dee
per you would add the word exlax to the end. "Smooth move, exlax." You can figure out for yourself why "exlax" goes hand in hand with "Smooth move."
#14
Bogus
(Skip to 2:00 for the phrase)
Bogus was the complete opposite of awesome. Not a word you wanted to use if you could avoid it. It meant something wasn't going your way.
#13
Sike
Sike was Psyching someone out or faking them out. I had a friend who, every time I seen him, would reach out his hand for a handshake and then jerk it back quickly while saying "Sike!!!". If he was really on his game he would run his fingers through his hair on the take back. I'd fall for it every time. Sike is kind of the physical version of "Not!!!".
#12
Totally
No further explanation needed.
#11
Bitchin'
Basically, it meant some
thing was cool, but cool to the nth degree.
#10
No duh
A sarcastic reply when someone is told something that is plainly obvious.
#9
No $#@! Sherlock
Very similar to "No duh", but with the added insult of sarcastically calling them Sherlock Holmes.
#8
Bite Me
Something this kid doesn't say anymore to his little brother.
#7
$#@! Happens
Yes it does. It happens indeed.
#6
Whatever
Quick way to end a conversation when you don't want to hear it anymore. In the '90's "Whatever" turned into "Talk to the Hand".
#5
Gag Me With a Spoon
Anything that totally disgusted or repulsed you would summarily be met with this statement in the '80's.
#4
Like
This word was used to link any two sentences or as a replacement for "uh" or "uhm". Any Valley Girl worth their ilk spoke this word, on average, at a rate of every 4 words.
#3
Fer Sure
Could be used at face value or, more than not, sarcastically. Another staple for the Valley Girls.
#2
Dude
Perhaps the most vers
atile word in the English language. I could have an entire conversation with just the word dude if I had to. The Dude abides!!!

Awesome
If you want to see an example of it being said, check the "Gnarly" video at #15 at 1:36 in. Jeff Spicoli is Totally Awesome!!!
Comment with phrases you feel belonged on this list. There were plenty that could have just as easily made it. Thanks for reading guys. Now go forth and Be Excellent to one another!!!

Oh My Gosh! This is like sooo boss! But really, awesome is, like over-used to day, so, like, gag me with a spoon! But like fer sure, that word, has like stayed. My friend said "boss" once, and I was like, "Ya, that's from the 80's" And he's all like "What?" And I'm all like "No duh Sherlock!"
Haha! Thanks for this site!
